Rustic Look

If you think all your pictures are looking too simple, giving one of them a certain effect can change this. This tutorial will give you a chance to increase your photoshop skills and make a photo look rustic.

1.

Start with a photo that already is sized, etc. Go to Image/ Adjustments/ Hue/Saturation. (CTRL + U does all this as well.)

2.

The Hue/Saturation window should pop up. Decrease the saturation on your photo. You'll have to play around with it to see what looks best. I think -66 will look the best for my photo. After you pick, hit OK.

3.

Next you'll need to go to Filter/ Noise/ Add Noise. The Add Noise window will pop up. Increase your noise to a point that you like. Too much noise will look dumb, to be honest, but too little won't get the effect across. I'm going to go with 1.55 for mine. Make sure its also set to Uniform and Monochromatic. Hit OK.

4.

We're going to use the Burn tool, which is the highlighted hand. If that tool isn't there, hold down the arrow in the bottom right of that same box, and another window will appear. Select the burn tool. Right click somewhere on the photo. A box will appear. This box will let you change your brush settings. Make sure its on a "fuzzy" brush with a good sized diameter. Mine is 333 px. Finally, look to the toolbar on the top. Select Range: Shadows, Exposure: 87%. Again, these are options that I know will work for my photo. You might want to use Highlights or Midtones, or have a smaller exposure. Its up to you.

5.

I'm going to burn the edges of my photo. Using the burn tool, "burn" the four corners of your picture. Not too much, not too little. Make it subtle.

6.

Done! A fairly rustic looking photograph. Nice work. :D
